Registered Nurse – Job Description
Role Summary
The RN provides professional, evidence-based nursing care using the nursing process to young adult, adult, and elderly patients. This role requires comprehensive assessment skills, proficiency with cardiac and invasive procedures, critical thinking, and the ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Clinical Responsibilities
Assessment & Nursing Process
- Performs thorough head-to-toe assessments and re-assessments per policy.
- Applies the nursing process to all patients, including:
- Cardiac monitoring & intervention
- Sedation management
- Pain management
- Chest tube care/insertion support
- Pre- & post-cardiac catheterization care
- TPN/PPN administration
- Specialized IV drips and titration
- Transfusion therapy
- KODA protocols
- Central line access
- COBRA compliance
- IV therapy & IVADD
- Waived testing
Direct Patient Care
- Provides individualized, age-specific care supporting physiologic stability and hemodynamic monitoring.
- Evaluates patient responses and adjusts care plans accordingly.
- Demonstrates ability to assist physicians with departmental procedures.
- Ensures safe and accurate medication administration.
Documentation & Communication
- Maintains complete and accurate documentation including histories, assessments, treatments, and patient responses.
- Uses SBAR and professional communication with physicians, team members, patients, and families.
- Involves patients and families in the plan of care; develops teaching plans and evaluates learning outcomes.
- Functions as a patient advocate and addresses psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.
Professionalism & Collaboration
- Interacts professionally with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles for all served age groups.
- Acts as a role model, team leader, and preceptor for new staff.
- Responds promptly to workload changes to maintain departmental efficiency.
Performance Improvement & Safety
- Participates in QI/PI activities to improve outcomes and departmental processes.
- Maintains safe operation of patient care equipment, performs mechanical adjustments as needed, and ensures adequate supply stock.
- Adheres to infection control, safety, and organizational policies.
- Assists with cost containment through responsible supply use.
Additional Responsibilities
- Performs housekeeping duties and assists with patient transport when required.
- Maintains professional growth through continuing education, staff meetings, workshops, and current literature review.
- Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education & Credentials
- Associate Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred
- Current RN license required
- Required certifications:
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
- EKG competency
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years required
- 5 years preferred
