Wesley Medical Center, part of the HCA Midwest Health system, is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented RN PreOp ASU nurse to join our Healthcare & Medical Services department in our ambulatory surgery/preoperative unit. In this role, you will play a key part in preparing patients for surgical and procedural care, ensuring a safe, efficient, and patient-centered experience from admission through transfer to the operative team.
The RN PreOp ASU is responsible for performing comprehensive preoperative assessments, including reviewing medical histories, current medications, allergies, surgical consents, diagnostic results, and anesthesia clearance. You will obtain and document vital signs, perform focused physical assessments, identify potential risk factors, and collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other members of the care team to optimize patients for surgery. You will educate patients and families about the planned procedure, anesthesia expectations, pre- and post-operative instructions, pain management strategies, and discharge plans, using clear, compassionate communication tailored to each patient’s needs.
Working within Wesley Medical’s culture of care, teamwork, and excellence, you will practice evidence-based nursing, follow hospital and regulatory protocols, and uphold the highest standards of infection prevention, patient privacy, and safety. Daily responsibilities include initiating IV access, administering ordered medications, managing preoperative checklists, verifying identity and procedure, and ensuring all documentation and consents are complete and accurate prior to transport. You will respond promptly to changes in patient condition, escalate concerns appropriately, and support a calm, reassuring environment for patients who may be anxious about surgery.
As a key member of a collaborative and innovative environment, you will coordinate with perioperative, PACU, and surgical teams to support efficient patient flow, timely case starts, and effective handoffs. You will contribute to quality improvement efforts, participate in staff meetings and ongoing education, and support new team members through knowledge sharing and mentorship. Wesley Medical Center offers the opportunity to grow professionally, develop specialization in perioperative nursing, and make a meaningful impact on the health of the Wichita community.
The ideal candidate is a licensed RN with strong assessment skills, excellent clinical judgment, and experience or interest in preoperative or ambulatory surgery nursing. You should be comfortable with IV therapy, pre-op medication administration, use of electronic health records, and working in a fast-paced, team-driven environment. A commitment to compassionate care, clear communication, and continuous learning is essential, aligning with Wesley’s mission to deliver outstanding, patient-centered healthcare while supporting employee growth and career development.
