Unit: 6 West – Neuro
Unit Overview
- 20 beds (14 floor beds)
- Patient Ratio: 1:5–6
Required Certifications
- ✅ BLS
- ✅ NIHSS (required at submission)
- ⭐ ACLS preferred
Patient Population
- Stroke
- Seizures
- Neuroscience patients
- Deep Brain Stimulators (DBS)
- Post-operative spine surgeries
- Neurological disorders
Required Experience
- Strong recent Neuro nursing experience
- Recent Epic EMR experience
- Frequent and proficient management of G-tubes
- Solid Med/Surg skills
- Stepdown experience is NOT required
Drips
Physician-directed titration only (primarily in stepdown settings).
Common drips include:
- Amiodarone
- Cardizem
- Nitro
- Dopamine
- Nipride
- Ketamine
- Lasix
- Bumex
- Insulin
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse available 24/7
- 3 CNAs per shift (approximately 1:7–10 ratio)
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
Respiratory Care
- May receive stable ("floor") ventilator patients.
- Ventilator management is handled by RT and physicians.
- RN vent experience is not required.
Telemetry
- Telemetry monitored.
- Monitor technicians interpret rhythms.
- RNs only verify monitor technician documentation in Epic (strip interpretation not required).
Scheduling
- Facility may allow 3 consecutive shifts, but this is not guaranteed.
- Travelers should remain flexible.
Weekend Requirements
- Weekend Days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Weekend Nights: Either
- Friday, Saturday, Sunday or
- Saturday, Sunday, Monday
- Weeknight positions: Every other weekend or 3 weekend shifts per schedule (Saturday/Sunday)
Holidays
- Travelers participate in the holiday rotation.
Floating
Primary floating assignments include:
Additional floating to other hospital units may occur if needed.
Dress Code
- Any combination of Royal Blue and White scrubs.
