Contract | Night Shift | 12-hour shifts | Every other weekend required | Rotating holidays
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care in an 18-bed Neuro ICU at a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio, managing complex neurological cases including strokes (with/without tPA), ventriculostomies, and post-craniectomy patients
- Titrate and manage a wide variety of physician-ordered drips as required in an ICU setting
- Operate and troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment including ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow devices
- Read and interpret cardiac monitor strips independently; unit staffs Phillips monitors with a telemetry tech on every shift
- Manage arterial lines, central lines, and ventriculostomies; apply NIH Stroke Scale assessment and acute stroke management protocols
- Float as needed to intermediate care (1:3 ratio) or general floor units (1:4 ratio) when staffing requires; travelers float first
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license (or confirmation that the application process has been initiated)
- BLS certification required
- ACLS certification required
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification required
- Demonstrated experience with ventriculostomy, ventilator management, arterial lines, central lines, tPA administration, acute stroke management, and post-craniectomy care
- Must comply with a drug-free workplace policy; a negative drug screen for all panels is required
- Candidates with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility should be aware that a local rate applies
Preferred Experience / Skills
- Prior travel or contract nursing experience in a Neuro ICU or comparable high-acuity ICU setting
- Comfort managing a broad range of titratable drips per physician order in a fast-paced ICU environment
- Experience working alongside charge nurses, house supervisors, and patient care techs in a collaborative team structure
